I am so sorry for your loss. Both my husband and my son died of their addictions. My sister-in-law and her son died of complications of alcoholism. I've found the recovery community in general, and family recovery programs especially, are often in denial that our qualifiers have a high chance of drug and/or alcohol related death. I've found little in the 12 step literature to support working the steps after a loss, so I've started writing my own here (Grief & the 12 Steps). There is one Nar-Anon online group called Hope After Loss for people who have lost their addicted loved one. We need to do better.

Caroline, I’m so sorry for your loss.

Grief has been the catalyst to my addiction, a source of near derailment in my early sobriety, and eventually a source of deep strength in my ongoing recovery.

Grief by far has been my greatest challenge in my recovery. ❤️‍🩹

But staying sober through loss is possible.

Sending you so much love and holding space for your pain. 🙏

🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼thank you for being here. We don’t have to do recovery and life alone. Including grieve. I’m so grateful for this 💕

This is gorgeous writing, Caroline. Thank you for sharing Elyse with us. Such a beautiful tribute to her and to everyone who has been taken to the other side.

Recovery never ends; we get reminders of this all the time.

All the stories help us heal.
