Bird by Bird, after 25 years in sobriety, you think I would have heard this one before...so true. I do flowers everyday at my shop, and the concept of one thing (one action) at a time, builds a beautiful flower arrangement, it probably comes naturally after 39 years, but some days, it seems insurmountable, customers, bills, clean bathroom, mop floors, then coming back to Anne Lamont...Bird by Bird. Needed to hear this today. Thanks
The connection between writing and recovery that doesn't get made enough is that both require you to stop needing to see the whole thing before you begin. The full manuscript, the complete life, the resolved relationship with alcohol. It all sits there judging you before a single word is written.
I love this "bird by bird" metaphor - permission to work in the only unit of time that actually exists. The next line. The next day. The next choice.
Thanks for sharing! Living 'One day at a time' is such important recovery wisdom.
Agreed!

Thank you for this, Caroline!
I’m often overwhelmed at the enormity of God’s call and focus on my faults instead of His greatness.
I forget that every good thing I’m meant to do, He’s already prepared.
So each morning I dump out all my worries at His feet and ask Him to lead me through the day. (then I forget and have to repeat the process…👀)
But bird by bird, day by day, I’m learning to trust Him more. 🙏🏻❤️
