Is your recovery thriving or are you just surviving?
and why this matters for the next generation
How do you answer this question:
Is your recovery thriving or are you just surviving?
If I’m honest, it sometimes depends on the day. Lately, since going through some challenging things in my family (the sudden, unexpected loss of my dad), I’ve felt a new sort of thriving—after the storm.
Thriving that asks questions.
Thriving that tries new things.
Thriving that remembers.
For me, today, recovery is about discovery.
What makes recovery work? What makes me able to show up for others? What helps me love and care for myself in tender and authentic ways?
This picture was taken at a park near our home in Eastern Tennessee. Today, my kids are a reminder of why its important for me to not just survive, but to thrive in recovery - and do and learn and grow in every way I can. Not just for my own mental health and wellness, but for my children and the next generation.
Why is this important?
The U.S. Surgeon General recently cited increasing youth mental health needs to be "the defining public health issue of our time."
The American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and the Children’s Hospital Association have all declared youth mental health a national state of emergency.
The statistics continue… and we also know firsthand from our own personal experiences of struggle and recovery, our loved ones, and/or those we love and support.
We need to listen to the next generation. We need to listen to each other.
How are you doing today? Are you surviving or thriving? Where are you on your recovery journey and what leads you to greater places of healing?
I’d love to hear from you!!!
